Make your flight more comfortable
What should I do if:
a fire causes an emergency evacuation of the aircraft?
- Move away from fire and smoke.
- Stay quiet and listen for instructions from the flight crew.
- Concentrate on getting out and leave your possessions behind.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a wet napkin or handkerchief.
- Assist other passengers if you are able.
- Stay low and move quickly to the nearest safe front or rear exit.
Use the floor lighting to help guide you to the exit.
Once you reach the evacuation slide, remove any high-heeled shoes BEFORE you sit down to slide. Place arms, elbows in, across your chest with your legs and feet together and jump feet first onto evacuation slide. Once you exit the aircraft, move away and clear the area, but remain alert for emergency vehicles rushing to provide assistance.
Never return to an aircraft that has experienced a fire, even if it looks safe
How can I avoid injury on my flight?
Watch for special travel advisories issued by agencies of the U.S. Government concerning weather concerns, security threats or other important issues at or on route to your destination.
Research the Airline’s safety record and use the safest one. This is especially important when you are flying non-U.S. Airlines.
Book a non-stop flight to reduce the number of takeoffs and landings. Most accidents occur when the plane is increasing or decreasing altitude or speed, all of which happen during times of takeoff and landing.
Dress to cover as much skin as possible. Synthetic fabrics may melt when heated so wear clothing made of natural fabrics such as wool, cotton, denim or leather.
- Avoid restrictive clothing and wear clothing that is loose or can be loosened.
- Wear low-heeled, leather or canvas shoes. Lace up shoes are best because they can be loosened.
- Follow the flight attendants instructions. They are trained to keep you safe.
- Listen to the emergency instructions given at the beginning of the flight.
- Read the safety instruction card placed in the magazine pouch of the seat in front of you and locate your flotation device.
Make a mental plan of action in case of emergency. Locate the emergency exits both in front and behind you. Count the rows between you and the nearest front and rear exits so you’ll know how far to go even if smoke blocks your view.
Always keep your seatbelt fastened when you are in your seat. This can help protect you if you experience unexpected turbulence.
Have the flight attendant pour refills of hot beverages over their beverage cart and not over your lap. They should take your cup, refill it and then hand it back.
Limit your intake of alcohol. The cabin’s pressure causes alcohol to have a greater effect on your system than it does on the ground, so two drinks might feel like three or four.
Don’t place overweight items in the overhead cabin storage. You could injure your back in doing so and those items could fall back out on you or others.
Ask the flight attendant to remove any overweight items from the overhead cabin storage.
Avoid the seat under the overhead storage compartment. Many people are injured each year by heavy items falling from the overhead storage compartment.
How can I be more comfortable on the plane?
Pick the best seat for you in your class and then check on upgrades available at check-in.
If you think you’ll need them, grab a pillow and blanket as soon as you get on the plane, they go fast.
Dress in layers so you can peel off or add to as necessary.
Take a bathroom break, even if it’s just to get up and move around a little.
Washing your face can help you feel refreshed.
How can I reduce the effects of motion sickness?
Most people are perfectly comfortable flying on planes. If you’ve never flown before and fear sickness, see if your doctor can find something that could help if you need it. You probably won’t, but once you’re on the plane it’s too late and you might have trouble contacting your doctor before the flight home.
Booking a seat in the middle of the plane next to the wings will provide a smoother ride.
How can I reduce the effects of a change in altitude on my ears?
The planes are pressurized, but your ears are still sensitive to the change in altitude. The landing is usually worse than the take off.
If you have a head cold, try anything that has worked to clear it up before you travel.
If you have an ear infection, you might want to consider seeing the countryside on a train. An ear infection can be extremely painful on an airplane. You should contact your doctor and let them know about your travel plans to see if they can help you before you leave.
Children and adults both find relief from sucking on candy or juicy chewing gum. The act of chewing and swallowing relieves the pressure on the ears at take off and landing. Be careful when choosing the juicy treat for small children to avoid the possibility of choking during turbulence.
Nursing a baby can be used to help the baby’s and everyone else’s ears.
Yawning is also a good way to help the ears.
If you’re able to sleep, you should request a wake up before you begin descent. The landing is usually harder on your ears and since you swallow less when you sleep, you may wake up on the ground in pain.
Children and some adults are particularly good at smuggling hotel pool water home from their vacation. Buy some drops and get it out before you fly.
Whatever you do, do it all through take off and landing so you can adjust to the change little by little.

Jet Lag and the First Day
Anyone who flies through time zones
has to grapple with the biorhythmic confusion known as jet lag. When you switch your wristwatch six to nine hours forward, your body says, "Hey, what's going on?" Body clocks don't reset so easily. All your life you've done things on a 24-hour cycle. Now, after crossing the Atlantic, your body wants to eat when you tell it to sleep and sleep when you tell it to enjoy a museum.
Too many people assume their first day
will be made worthless by jet lag. Don't prematurely condemn yourself to zombiedom. Most people I've traveled with, of all ages, have enjoyed productive — even hyper — first days. You can't avoid jet lag, but with a few tips you can minimize the symptoms.
Leave home well-rested.
Flying halfway around the world is stressful. If you leave frazzled after a hectic last night and a wild bon-voyage party, there's a good chance you won't be healthy for the first part of your trip. An early-trip cold used to be a regular part of my vacation until I learned this very important trick: Plan from the start as if you're leaving two days before you really are. Keep that last 48-hour period sacred (apart from your normal work schedule), even if it means being hectic before your false departure date. Then you have two orderly, peaceful days after you've packed so that you are physically ready to fly. Mentally, you'll be comfortable about leaving home and starting this adventure. You'll fly away well-rested and 100 percent capable of enjoying the bombardment of your senses that will follow.
On the flight, drink plenty of liquids, eat lightly, and rest.
Long flights are dehydrating. I ask for "two orange juices with no ice" every chance I get. Help yourself to the juice pitchers in the galley area. Eat lightly and have no coffee and only minimal sugar until the flight's almost over. Alcohol will stress your body and aggravate jet lag. The in-flight movies are good for one thing — nap time. With two or three hours' sleep during the transatlantic flight, you will be functional the day you land. But remember to get up, move around, and stretch your legs occasionally to keep your blood circulating.
Reset your mind to local time.
When the pilot announces the local European time, reset your mind along with your wristwatch. Don't prolong jet lag by reminding yourself what time it is back home. Be in Europe.
On arrival, stay awake until an early local bedtime.
If you doze off at 4 p.m. and wake up at midnight, you've accomplished nothing. Plan a good walk until early evening. Jet lag hates fresh air, daylight, and exercise. Your body may beg for sleep, but stand firm: Refuse. Force your body's transition to the local time. You'll probably awaken very early on your first morning. Trying to sleep later is normally futile. Get out and enjoy a "pinch me, I'm in Europe" walk, as merchants set up in the marketplace and the town slowly comes to life. This will probably be the only sunrise you'll see in Europe.
You'll read about many jet-lag cures. Some travelers rave about melatonin, but I tackle jet lag without drugs. Just leave unfrazzled, minimize jet lag's symptoms, force yourself into European time, and give yourself a chance to enjoy your trip from the moment you step off the plane.

Is Cruising for Me?
So, you're thinking about taking a cruise
for the first time, and as anyone should, you have questions. What is cruising really like? Is it right for me? Where should I go? What can I see?
Welcome to our Introduction to Cruising 101. By the time we're done, you'll be a Cruise Guru and probably be able to wrote these columns and articles yourself! Ready? Here we go!
WHO IS A TYPICAL CRUISER?
We don't believe there is a "typical" cruiser. Cruisers are as wide and varied a lot as the ships that they sail on. Some are young, some older, some are looking for non-stop fun and some want cultural enrichment. Unlike in the days of yore - pre-1976 (about the time the original "Love Boat" was on TV), cruises are not just for the elderly and wealthy. Back in the 1960's and 70's, when cruising was in its infancy, the majority of cruisers were more mature, had plenty of money and plenty of time. It was not uncommon for a ship to depart New York City for a three-week jaunt to the Caribbean.
But over the years,
cruising has evolved into "everyman's holiday". On a cruise ship today, you are likely to find passengers from all ages, income levels and backgrounds. According to the Cruise Line International Association, the majority of cruisers today are under 60 years old and has an annual household income of $60,000 or less. In fact, the average age of cruise passengers has decreased year over year to the mid-40s and cruise lines are re-tooling their on board products and offerings to appeal to even younger and more active passengers. In fact, many of the cruise lines are now recognizing the Gen-X'ers (25-35 years old) and the Gen-Tech'ers (15-25) as the two age groups that hold the most promising prospects as future cruise customers.
In actuality, on a typical 7-night Caribbean cruise,
you are likely to find the majority of the passengers in the 35-55 age range, but a good rule of thumb is that the longer the cruise, the older the average age will be. Of course, on shorter three and four night cruises, you may find a younger crowd but it is just as likely to be a widely varied lot with younger and older couples, singles, families and seniors.
IS CRUISING RIGHT FOR ME?
Well of course it is!! Cruises offer something for just about everyone. Some people cruise just for the sheer joy of being at sea. It's a magical feeling of relaxation, elation and freedom from the stress of everyday life. Or some cruise to experience the convenience of visiting up to six different ports of call in one week, all without having to worry about packing and unpacking, making hotel reservations or catching flights. The ship is your floating hotel and magically transports you from one exotic destination to the next.
What do people find so appealing about a cruise? Cruises offer excellent value as they include your accommodations for the length of the cruise, meals and entertainment. On board the latest generation of cruise ships you'll find multiple dining options ranging from formal sit-down restaurants, to pizza, a grill serving hot dogs and hamburgers, casual buffets and informal bistros. You'll also find a myriad of entertainment options with lavish Broadway and Las Vegas style revues, live rock and country-western bands, cabaret, jazz, piano bars, discos and casinos. You'll also be able to keep up your workout regimen with the state of the art fitness facilities and spas, not to mention jogging tracks and swimming pools. On some ships you will even find ice-skating rinks and rock climbing walls!! Today's modern ships also follow and feature many of the popular trends found in world-class resorts and major cities such as Martini, Champagne and Caviar Bars, Cigar Clubs, cozy bistros, Coffee Bars and Internet Cafes.
The myriad of on board activities can range from napkin folding and vegetable carving to sports competitions, lectures on the fine arts, politics and world famous authors. Then there is the simple, yet hedonistic allure of simply relaxing in a deck chair with a view of the sea and being waited on hand and foot by your ship's onboard staff.
So, as you can see, life on board ship is not so different than vacationing at a large resort or in a large city. You can have and do it all or do nothing at all.
My Top 10 Tips for Traveling in Europe
When the economy is jittery
and the dollar is down, there is no need to put your vacation plans to Europe on hold. Americans need to travel smarter in order to turn their trip into a safe, smooth, and affordable reality.
1. Fly "open-jaws"
(into one city and out of another): Save time and money by avoiding a costly return to your starting point. Try to start your itinerary in "mild" countries (such as England) and work into the places with greater culture shock (such as Turkey) to minimize stress. Save countries offering the cheapest shopping — and greatest health risks — for the end of your trip.
2. Use ATMs rather than travelers checks:
You will get your cash cheaper and faster using an ATM. Just keep in mind that while ATMs give the best possible rates, they do come with transaction fees. Minimize fees by making fewer and larger withdrawals. Store the cash safely in your money belt.
3. Shop cheap and interesting:
Do most of your shopping and gift buying in the cheaper countries where gifts are more interesting and your shopping dollar stretches the farthest . The difference is huge: for the cost of a pewter Viking ship in Oslo, you can buy an actual boat in Turkey.
4. Adapt to European tastes: Cultural chameleons drink tea in England, beer in Prague, red wine in France, and white wine on the Rhine. They eat fish in Portugal and reindeer in Norway. Going with the local specialties gets you the best quality and service for the best price.
5. Consider driving as a group: Four people sharing a car travel cheaper than four individuals buying four railpasses. Even at $5 a gallon, cars get great mileage and distances between sights are short. A single two-hour train ticket can cost you the price of a full tank of gas.
6. Pay with local cash: While credit cards get you a good exchange rate, many places offering Europe's best deals — from craft shops to bed & breakfasts — accept only cash.
7. Explore no-frills flights: Europe's highly competitive no-frills airlines (i.e. Ryanair, Virgin Air) can get you from one city to another faster and cheaper than the train . You generally book the flights yourself by phone or Web. Beware though: cheap airlines often use small airports located far from the city center, which can cost a little extra time and money.
8. Go business: During summer and weekends year-round, you can get a fancy business hotel room at a cheap one-star hotel price . It's not unusual to score a $300 double room for $100.
9. Don't over-tip: Only Americans tip 15 to 20 percent in Europe, even tipping when it is already included or not expected. Ask locals (who are customers rather than employees of a restaurant) for advice.
10. Buy museum passes: Passes save time and money. The Paris Museum pass, for example, pays for itself in three visits and saves you hours by letting you skip long lines. With a pass you can also pop painlessly into sights that might otherwise not be worth the expense.

International Consolidator tickets
Every traveler wants a cheap international air fare.
And often a traveler wants to fly off to Europe or Asia now.
If airlines aren't serving up low fares (and they usually don't for last-minute departures), bargain hunters turn to the Internet to see what Expedia, Orbitz, Priceline, Travelocity are offering. But savings can be minimal, especially now during high season when planes are filled. So some savvy (and not so savvy) people then turn to consolidators.
Consolidators, sometimes called wholesalers,
help the airlines fill empty seats by contracting with carriers to buy seats in bulk at a deeply discounted and unpublished price. The consolidator can mark up the price of a ticket to make a profit and sell to a travel agent scouting a low fare for a client. It’s a legitimate system in which everyone wins. It helps airlines with their bottom line.
But as with everything else, you must know how the system works because the process can be aggravating. And you've got to ask questions.
Experienced travelers probably know
that when demand is high and seats are limited (as it is now for travel to Europe), prices from consolidators are not going to be dramatically lower than what they can get from the airlines or online booking services. But travelers unfamiliar with consolidators--whose ads usually are little more than an inch or two, with no room for fine print--may not understand this.
The consolidator process boils down to what the airlines call inventory management, "Consolidators are given a certain inventory [by the airlines] that they can book. The consolidator will set the price, depending on the season, the competition and market conditions. And, of course, they look at their historical [sales] data. Every consolidator has a contract with an airline or several airlines. That way you can cover most of the world.
Pricing consolidator tickets is a tricky issue. we will not sell directly to the consumer they only sell to a travel agent. "Travel agents get their special price. If I undercut my travel agent I'm cutting off my arms and my legs. Consumers usually are one-time buyers; travel agents are regular. We give the agent a margin to earn money, depending on season. When the seats are higher and tougher to get, our markups are much higher."

I have over 30 years of experience in the travel industry and also hold a Federal Bond with the Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC). I work closely with all cruises lines and tour operators and makes recommendations for vacation packages my clients. I raised $200,000 in private capitol to start my first travel agency. I am the administrator of Academy Travel School founded in 1990 to teach people how to become professional travel agents and start their own home-based travel agency. I also plan, write and produce my own local TV show, “Let’s Talk Travel” on public access channel. I hold positions on the Board of Directors on Commission on the Status of Women, reporting directly to County Board of Supervisors, and secretary on SLOCOPA TV show, a non profit organization, and I am former President of Optimists Club, past Ambassador for the local Chamber of Commerce for 9 years, and I am the founder and director of Travel Connections & Social Club. I am also a travel consultant for Gerson Lerhman Group and Goldman Sacks.
I have been in the travel business since 1979! WOW! That is a long time! I got hired right out of college with American Express and stayed there for 7 years. I have an AA degree from Foothill College and in 1984 received my CTC degree.
Started my agency in 1989
along with my travel school, teaching people to be professional travel agents since 1989 and still teaching today! The travel school is now taught via a virtual website and I can train anyone who can access the internet right from my desktop to their laptop. I believe in the one-to-one hands-on training approach. Once signed up they get the Galileo Icon on their desktop and everything is taught in live time. They learn what a fare rule is and understand what makes them. Along with teaching about tours and cruises and actually calling and making bookings so they are prepared for the real client when they graduate from class.
I was a million + in air ticket sales back in early 90's. Well we all know what happened then. So I closed for a year and was in my bedroom wondering what I was going to do when I grow up! at the tender age of 50. So I restructured and reopened with leisure travel and $5.00 in my pocket.
I started a Travel Club. Using my travel club to run free press releases inviting people to join me for dinner once a month and 10 years later have over 1,000 on my email list. I plan social things to do during the month and plan group cruises and tours. We have been all over the world together. I also offer to help find roommates for those who don't want to pay the single supplement.
I then decided to look into TV. So now I host "Let's Talk Travel" on my local public access TV station in town. I invite my sales reps on to talk about their cruise lines or tour companies or invite someone who has been on a fabulous trip and would like to share it with my audience.
I am starting a "grass roots" effort to put the "professional" back in travel and in travel agents! And why the public should look to a professional travel agent to handle their leisure travel.
So join me and my effort! Call me I can share with you on some of these things I have done over time!
I have now added to my business building by having a once a month dance for my travel club. I found a venue in town to hold the dance, hired a great band, putting out press releases all over town and posting on FB, Twitter and LinkedIn about the dance. I also use a different non profit organization each month to donate all the proceeds to. I take the check to them get my picture taken handing them a check and get it into the local newspaper. What better advertising can you ask for free!

Home Business more
Your Home-Based Travel Agency
Succeeding as a home-based travel agency means using "guerilla tactics" to beat out the glitzy storefront agency down on Main Street. And what better way to do that than to bring the "travel agency" to your customers' homes instead of forcing them to come see you in your "office". For many home-based travel agents this is the kind of "differentiator" that wins them loyal customers.
You may want to use your home to host a "cruise night" when you are promoting cruises or have a Hawaiian-theme party to promote great deals on a vacation in the islands.
The travel industry is a "$4 trillion dollar industry" and you can be part of that. People are making real money in this industry. Whether you want to work part time you can earn as much as $500 (or more) on every sale. That's not pocket change, that's a serious commission. Full-timers are supporting themselves and their families. A lot of them are seeing more of the world that they every dreamed of seeing before. A few of them are making very good money indeed, over $50,000 or more! Even the "American Society of Travel Age (ASTA) recognizes that home-based travel agents are the wave of the future.
Becoming a home-based travel agency is easy. The problem is knowing what kind of home based travel agency to be. There are probably many ways of being a home-based travel agency and no one does it exactly the same.
Booking Agents
Are usually attracted to the idea of becoming home-based travel agency because they love getting involved in all the details of planning wonderful trips, across the country or around the world. Or perhaps they have developed some expertise in a particular destination or type of vacation or mode of travel, calling it "niche" marketing yourself.
Anyone who is halfway serious about pursuing a career as a full-fledge home-based travel agency -- even on a part time basis -- will very quickly qualify for the "IATAN card". This is the Rolls-Royce of travel agent photo ID cards and it can be used to get all the discounts and privileges world wide to all agents meeting the earned income commission.
One of the greatest things about the opportunities available to home-based travel agencies is that this is not a one-size-fits-all or all-or-nothing proposition.
Booking Agents can:
- Work only occasionally to find great deals for themselves and a small circle of friends
- Work just enough to earn themselves one or two great vacations every year
- Work as home-based travel agency on the side, in addition to their regular jobs
- Work part time basis to earn a respectable second income
Whether you work just occasionally or put in a 60-hour week exactly how you work is totally up to you. You are completely free to concentrate on the destinations, activities or modes of travel that excite you. There's no one to tell you what to sell, where to sell it, to whom to sell it or how to sell it!
The key concept is that you are independent.
Think about that a moment. It means that you are your own boss. No one can tell you what to do or how to do it. You control your own destiny. Your success (or failure) is entirely your responsibility.
If that scares . Well, maybe this isn't for you.
If that excites you, congratulations! You have what it takes to be a success as a home-based travel agency!
Although you are independent and on your own, you are never alone as a home-based travel agency. You must constantly work with others to provide service to your clients. Virtually, every home-based travel agency must form a relationship with a host agency. The host agency must be ARC approved with affiliations with a consortia and other travel industry organizations.
As a home-based travel agency you will need:
A host ARC approved agency that offers the ICON for your desktop
A contract with your host agency
Understand the nature of your relationship with your host agency
What you will receive:
- IATAN card with your earned commissions
- Get the travel industry discounts and benefits to which you are entitled
- Take tax-deductible cruises while you learn the business
- Receive FREE training and seminars from travel industry
- Enjoy tax benefits of a home office
Benefits You'll Receive with the Home-Based
Ongoing Telephone and E-mail Support
We'll provide you with ongoing telephone support to answer your questions and help you through any problems you might have. One of our agents will be personally assigned to your account to assist you.
